About Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox from the American League (AL) Central division are one of two professional baseball teams playing in Chicago, the other being National League members the Chicago Cubs. One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the Chicago team was established as a major league baseball club in 1900. The club was originally called the Chicago White Stockings, but this was soon shortened to Chicago White Sox. The team played home games at South Side Park before, in 1910, moving to Comiskey Park for the next eight decades.
The White Sox won the 1906 World Series with a defense-oriented team dubbed "the Hitless Wonders", and the 1917 World Series led by Eddie Cicotte, Eddie Collins, and Shoeless Joe Jackson. The 1919 World Series was marred by the Black Sox Scandal, in which several members of the White Sox were accused of conspiring with gamblers to fix games. In response, Major League Baseball's new Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned the players from Major League Baseball for life. They were not to win another pennant for 40 years until 1959, when they won the American League pennant. They won the AL pennant again in 2005, when they also went on to win the World Series playing against Houston Astros.
The 2005 Series thus involved two teams who had been a long time waiting for success. This was the Astros first ever World Series in 44 years while the White Sox had waited 47 years to play in a Series and 98 years since their last victory. In the event 2005 proved a triumph for the Sox as they gained a total wipe-out with a 4-0 Series victory.
Looking at some of the great players in White Sox history, we start with the hall of famer Frank Thomas, the best hitter in White Sox history. He was a two-time Most Valuable Player, five-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger award recipient.
Harold Baines was instrumental to the 1983 Winnin' Ugly White Sox that claimed the best record in baseball. During his 14-year White Sox career, Baines batted .288, hit 221 homers and drove in 981 RBI.
Shoeless Joe Jackson owns the third-highest batting average in Major League Baseball history at .356. During his years with the White Sox, he hit .340 with 30 HR . Babe Ruth once said, "I copied Jackson's style because I thought he was the greatest hitter I've ever seen, the greatest natural hitter I ever saw. He's the guy who made me a hitter." Quite an accolade.
Robin Ventura was a key defensive playet, racking up five Gold Gloves in his 10 years on the South Side as well as hitting 171 HRs and driving in 741 RBI.
